"Jaipur" the capital of the state, is called the Pink city as its wasted pink in colour. It signifies the hospitality in the local culture. Planned by a young Bengali architect, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, Jaipur was built by Maharaja Swai Jai Singh II in 1727. It’s been laid in a grid system, with straight avenues, roads, streets, lanes criss-cross the city with rows of shops on either side of main bazaars arranged in nice rectangular city sectors. “Shilpaslastra”, an epochal treatise on Hindu architecture, served as the principle for the planning of the city.
Pink City is stubbed with the dreamy palaces, rugged fortresses perched on hills. The only planned city of its time, Jaipur is encircled by formidable wall. Jaipur presents a mix of tradition and modernity. The gardens and the parks intersperse the ethnic colourful bazaars where one can shop for Rajasthani handlooms and other crafts. A night’s stay at the residence of Maharajas, which now work as the marvellous heritage hotels, sends one to the days of Royalty of yore.
