"Nagaur" Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, gifted this township to Rao Amar Singh Rathore. Dotted with the massive ramparts and innumerable impressive gateways, splendid palaces and palatial mansions, Moti Mahal, Badal Mahal and the Hawa Mahal are three of the most outstanding architectural marvels. Blend of the typical Persian and Nagaur styles can be seen in the hanging paintings of the courtyards or Barodari . The decorated walls and entrances of Nagaur’s temples, stand out from others. As well, they depict in great detail various episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
On the same scale, the paintings in the Jain temples depict the lives of Lord Mahavira and Parshavnath. The 15th century mosque, Tarkin ki Dargah’, is a must see.
Annually, a cattle fair is held here in the month of January/February. The town is horded by cows, bullocks, oxen and camels, during this four day festival, accompanied by their multicolour turbaned buyers and sellers. This spice rich place is known for its chilli exports, as well. |
