"Pushkar" This place holds a great mythological significance. Its said that once Lord Brahma was on his way in search of a suitable place to perform a Yajna, Fire sacrifice. While he was looking for the same, a lotus fell from his hand towards the earth and water sprouted from three places, where it fell. Pushkar Lake is said to be one of the spots– and serves as an important Hindu pilgrimage centre.
Along banks of this picturesque lake, 11 kms from Ajmer, is situated the town of Pushkar. It’s topologically rifted from Ajmer by the Nag Pahoor or the snake mountain.
Pushkar, as any other place in Rajasthan, is famous for its temples. One of the most famous is; the Brahma temple – the only one dedicated to Lord Brcihma in the country. A town that remains dormant all the year round bursts with joy during fair. The fair here serves the two purposes, one religious and the other commercial. Thousands of devotees take a holy dip in the lake at this time in October-November.
As well, a huge and colourful caffle fair – the Pushkar Fair fascinates visitors from around the world. During the fair, there is music and dance in the air. Celebration and colourful shops spring up during the fair. Villagers in the multi-hued attire host many cultural events and it goes hand in hand with the Puppet shows and camel races. |
